Despite the fact that thousands of various algae occur in the world pool owners should be worried only about one variety, so-called blue-green algae. These are uni- or multicellular plants turning non-organic compounds from water into organic ones. Basically, they are a cross of plants and bacteria and are very common in nature.
When they appear in your warm and sunny pool, they multiply rapidly. They appear as slime clinging to pool surfaces and turn water green. Water can change colour from sparkling blue to green-brown just in a day. What is interesting very often algae occur in masses after a storm – nobody really knows why. Perhaps it results from intensive light flashes stimulating algae growth.
Chlorine is definitely the chemical to use if you want to get rid of algae. However, very often there are such masses of them that the growth is quicker than chlorine reaction. Moreover, there is a type of algae to some extent resistant to chlorine. Therefore, besides chlorine use also an algaecide (e.g. Desalgine).
An Desalgine kills algae and, if you use it together with chlorine, algae organism is killed and decomposed into particles that may be easily filtered out for sparkling clean results. For such results chlorine and algaecide should be used in shock treatment doses, e.g. a triple dosage. |
