Nearly all pool manufacturers recommend that the swimming pools should be left filled during winter. In case of both types of pools sunk into the ground, steel and concrete ones, the pressure of water counteracts the force of freezing earth squeezing pool walls.
To avoid troublesome brushing in the spring and to prevent the liner (foil) from damage or discoloration, prepare the pool water appropriately already in autumn.
First, regulate the pH value (see: step 1 in step by step dosage) and shock chlorinate the water (see: step 2 in step by step dosage). Filter the water and then add Puripool Super – a long-effect algaecide preventing water from getting dirty and counteracting algae growth. Remember to circulate water after adding the chemical – to achieve this, it is best to turn on the pump avoiding the filter (valve position: recirculate or zirkulieren – see: filter rinsing).
The next major step is to lower the water level to about 10-16 cm below the skimmer inlet what should prevent the pool from overflowing in case of heavy falls in autumn and winter. Don’t forget to empty filter and heating installations.
To safeguard pool walls against damage resulting from expanding ice, place a few floating objects into the pool that will absorb the pressure of ice, the objects may include plastic bottles or empty chemical containers. You may tie them up to distribute them over the water surface.
A winter safety cover will protect the pool from the build up of falling leaves and other impurities.
After those few simple but necessary steps your pool is ready for winter.
If you intend to use the same water next season, test the water quality in March or April (when temperature rises above 0). Long effects of the algaecide added in autumn (Puripool Super) might have ended, so its is worthwhile to add a little disinfectant (chloru) or, once again, a little algaecide (Puripool Super), pump up the water to recirculate what will counteract algae growth even before the start of the pool season. |
